Your Google Business Profile brings in calls, visits and direction requests from local search. Most business owners never check who else can edit it.
Check who has access to your profile
Access builds up over the years. A former employee, a freelancer, an agency you’ve stopped working with, or whoever first set up the listing may still be able to edit it.
An access list nobody checks can lead to:
- unauthorised changes to your business details
- confusing or out-of-date posts
- delays when you need to update your listing
- being locked out of your own profile
I manage more than 40 local listings, including my own, and this is one of the most overlooked problems I see.
How to check who has access
- Sign in to the Google account connected to your Business Profile.
- Search for your business name on Google.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋮) on your profile.
- Select Business Profile settings.
- Click People and access.
- Review every name and email address listed.
If you don’t recognise an email address, find out who it belongs to before you remove it. Check with your team and any past marketing partners first, so you don’t cut off someone who still looks after your listing.
Give each person the right role
Keep primary ownership with someone inside your business, ideally you. Give agencies and freelancers Manager access. They can still help run your profile, and you stay in charge of who else gets in.
- Owners can add and remove users and make major changes.
- Managers can post updates, reply to reviews and edit business information. They can’t remove other users or transfer ownership.
