How to get more traffic without spending money
You don’t need a big ad budget to grow your website traffic. With good SEO, useful content and a few free platforms, you can bring in steady, high-quality visitors without paying for clicks.
Whether you run a blog, a business site or an online store, these are the 10 methods I’d start with.
1. Create evergreen content
Content is the base of any traffic plan, and evergreen topics keep bringing in visitors long after you publish them. Good formats include:
- how-to guides, such as “How to start a podcast”
- step-by-step tutorials
- reference posts, such as industry glossaries or FAQs
- case studies with real results
- long, in-depth articles
Update older articles with fresh information so they keep ranking.
2. Match search intent
To rank, a page has to give searchers what they’re looking for. To work that out:
- Read the “People also ask” box for the questions people search.
- Look at what already ranks. Are searchers getting lists, videos or FAQs?
- Study the top-ranking pages and make yours clearly more useful.
Narrow your topic too. “Best laptops for video editing” gives you a better chance than “Best laptops”.
3. Find rising topics with Google Trends
Google Trends shows which searches are growing, so you can publish before a topic peaks.
- Enter a keyword and set the time range to the past five years.
- Look for seasonal patterns. Searches for “best Christmas gifts” climb every November.
- Switch to YouTube Search to see which video topics are rising.
4. Link your own pages together
Internal links help search engines understand how your content fits together, and they keep visitors on your site for longer.
- Link to three to five related articles from every new post.
- Use anchor text that describes the page you’re linking to, instead of “click here”.
- Add links from older articles to your newer ones.
Build topic hubs, where one main guide links to several supporting articles. An SEO guide, for example, could link to separate posts on keyword research, backlinks and on-page SEO.
5. Repurpose your content
One good article can become several pieces of content on other platforms.
- Turn blog posts into YouTube videos or TikToks.
- Turn long guides into email courses.
- Turn list posts into Pinterest graphics.
- Record podcast episodes based on your existing articles.
A post called “10 SEO mistakes to avoid” could also become a LinkedIn carousel and a short Instagram Reel.
6. Join online communities
Reddit, Quora and Facebook groups can send you steady referral traffic if you help people instead of promoting yourself.
- On Quora, answer questions in your field and link to articles that help.
- On Reddit, take part in niche communities and share what you know.
- In Facebook groups, contribute for a while before you share any links.
Look at the most upvoted Quora answers in your niche and write blog posts that answer the question more fully.
7. Write for voice search and featured snippets
People ask voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant full questions, and Google often answers with a short featured snippet.
- Write headings as the questions people ask, such as “How long does SEO take to work?”
- Answer each question in the first sentence or two below it.
- Use bullet points, numbered lists and FAQs, which Google often pulls into snippets.
8. Earn backlinks
Links from respected sites improve your rankings and send referral traffic.
- Publish original research. Data people can cite attracts links on its own.
- Answer journalist requests on platforms such as Qwoted or Featured.
- Write guest posts for blogs in your industry.
Free tools and templates on your site also tend to get shared and linked to.
9. Use YouTube
YouTube is one of the most-used search engines in the world, so videos can bring in a lot of traffic.
- Make explainer videos on the same topics as your blog posts.
- Put a link to your website in every video description.
- Use end screens and cards to point viewers to your site.
A post on “Best productivity apps” could become a video on your top five, with a link to the full article.
10. Improve your click-through rate
More clicks from the same rankings means more traffic.
- Write titles that say exactly what the reader will get, such as “How to fix a slow WordPress site in 30 minutes”.
- Use numbers where they’re accurate, such as “7 SEO mistakes”.
- Write meta descriptions that answer the question or give a clear reason to click.

Free traffic takes time, but these methods build on each other. Pick one or two that fit your site, do them well and add more once they’re working.
