In September 2024 I launched a party hire business in Johannesburg that rents out one high-ticket item and nothing else. By April 2025 it had processed 120+ confirmed orders and collected 105+ five-star reviews. It also broke even, and I didn’t spend a rand on ads.
I do SEO for a living, so this was a chance to test my own advice with my own money.
Why I picked party hire
In Johannesburg, someone is celebrating every weekend. Birthdays, weddings, graduations and church events all need rentals, and that demand comes back week after week.
Most party hire companies list dozens of products. I chose one item that shows up at almost every celebration and put all my effort into ranking and selling that.
How I set it up
I built a landing page for each suburb I wanted to rank in. I filled out the Google Business Profile completely, with photos, the service area and a proper description.
Every order came with add-ons at no extra charge. I chose add-ons that customers liked and that didn’t eat into the margin.
I tracked every lead, so I always knew whether an inquiry came from the website or the Google Business Profile.
Why I removed the contact form
I dropped contact forms completely. Customers could message us on WhatsApp or call, and an automated reply went out the moment a new inquiry arrived. WhatsApp brought in 90% of qualified leads.
Ranking #1 across a 30km radius
As of April 2025, the business held the #1 map pack position for its main keyword across a 30km radius around Johannesburg. The grid scan below shows the coverage.

We got inquiries from towns more than two hours’ drive away. I put that reach down to four things: suburb-level pages, a fully filled-out Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, and content written around what local customers search for.
The numbers
Google Business Profile, November 2024 to April 2025
- 2,576 profile views
- 569 interactions, including 76 calls, 246 website clicks and 239 direction requests

Google Search Console
- 411 organic clicks from 4,180 impressions (9.8% CTR)
- Average position of 7.3
- 98% of clicks from South Africa

How we earned 105+ five-star reviews
We never ran a paid review campaign. The reviews came from what I call the Excellence System. That meant fast replies, clear communication, on-time delivery, equipment set up and ready for the event, and free extras customers didn’t expect.
Results after seven months
By April 2025 we were booked out most weekends, and the business had broken even. All of it came from local SEO and the Google Business Profile, with no ad spend.
What this means for your business
I started this business with no brand and no ad budget. Local SEO works the same way for a dentist in Manchester or a contractor in New York, because Google ranks local businesses on the same signals everywhere.
